Why Your Child Must Wear Sunglasses In The Summer

The 2021 holiday season will be unlike any other in modern history. Last year’s holiday plans may have been gutted by the pandemic, but this year we’re now pros at safeguarding our and our kids’ health. Confined to the backyards and balconies for over a year, our kids have now started dreaming of a vacay by the beach or a lakeside picnic. Most experts believed that the pandemic would have been under control, if not completely obliterated by 2021. And, all is not lost, people. With promising vaccines to beat the coronavirus, we can be a little optimistic about travel. That time is here and the summer sun awaits us.

As we plan our vacation, we need to ensure that all the essentials are packed, especially for the children. Face masks, check. Hand sanitizer, check. Face shields, check. Sunglasses, no? Why not? Their innocent eyes deserve the love and protection of 100 percent UV-blocking sunnies just as much as you do.  It’s crucial to stock up on children’s sun-wear, including sunglasses, because the sun can cause eye damage regardless of age. If adults wear shades to protect their eyes, don’t you agree our kids should too?

Not convinced? Here’s why kids need sunglasses:

  1. Kids’ larger pupils and clearer lenses allow up to 70 percent more UV light to reach the retinas than an adult’s eyes. Less filtering means high exposure, and this puts their retina at greater risk of damage.
  2. The skin around our eyes is thin, delicate, and highly sensitive. So even a short time under the midday sun can cause severe burns.
  3. Unlike adults, children spend a lot of their time outdoors. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), children’s eyes are more sensitive to UV absorption and up to 80 percent of a person’s lifetime exposure to UV will occur before the age of 18. So get them a pair of sunnies ASAP!
  4. No matter the travel destination, sunlight reflected off sand, snow, water or even the pavement is vivid in the summers. Such piercing flashes can cause immediate damage to the cornea.
  5. The long-term effects of sunburned eyes like cataracts, pterygium, macular degeneration, and eye melanoma accrue likely through childhood UV and blue light exposure.
  6. Every year, a 12 percent increase in the ozone layer depletion is recorded. That puts our children’s eyes at a greater risk of UV damage than when we were growing up. So while we may not have worn sunglasses as a child, our kids definitely need to.
  7. Sunglasses make your little cutie look cool on a hot day! Get them a pair solely for this reason.
