Paris is the city of light, love and of course fashion! Paris Fashion Week 2021 opened post-pandemic with designers and models blowing our minds away amidst the historical landmarks and manicured gardens. The magical city welcomed designers and editors as fashion got back to live shows.
Paris Fashion Week 2021 showcased some stunning sustainable apparel and very cool sunglasses designs. Whether you gravitate towards oversized sunglasses, retro frames, or futuristic designs, we have rounded up five of our favorite sunglasses trends spotted on the runways.
Marine Serre – Angular Sunglasses
For Paris Fashion Week 2021, Marine Serre decided to create a film, Ostal 24. It is a movie about a day in the life of a community residing in a depleted yet happy home. The place is situated on a rural landscape, with vintage and surreal props all around. It showcases overdyed pink vintage denim and tees, jaunty vests, high-waist jeans, and “popcorn” tops repurposed into gorgeous billowing dresses and layered-up bobbly tees.
The most striking piece was the white pantsuit with angular sunglasses. The sunglasses stole the show with their minimalist build, trendy design, and a stark contrast to the general oversized vintage sunglasses of the past era.

Paul Smith – Transparent Sunglasses
While tailored garments are the core of the collection, a lean silhouette nods to the 1970s. The added length, high breaks, and a modern, minimal feel are what Paul Smith is at its heart. Earthly hues fill the color palette; terracotta and clay complemented shades of sky blue, a much-needed positive vibe.
Transparent frame sunglasses seem to have been a runway staple since last year. My personal favorite, the subtle yet stylish transparent frame with tinted lens sunnies is here to stay and rule the runway for a long time. So, go grab them!

Saint Laurent – Black Sunglasses
Saint Laurent is back in Paris, baby! Set against the jaw-dropping, twinkling-like-a-million-stars Eiffel Tower, Anthony Vaccarello’s spring collection was equally breathtaking. Most of the fashion collection veered towards snug fit and tailoring. Vaccarello’s jackets, with their gender-fluid power shoulders, were divine.
The highlight of the evening was, however, the accessories, and particularly, the sunglasses. Among them, the one that stood out like a million-dollar baby was the round black sunglasses worn by a model in all white. The contrast, the poise, and the glamour all combined to make it my favorite look of the evening.

Balenciaga – Cat Eye Sunglasses
“My husband recorded that ’80s track by Corey Hart, ‘I wear my sunglasses at night —because you know, is there anything more absurdly fashionable than that?” stated Demna Gvasalia, the designer behind the Balenciaga collection, at Paris Fashion Week to Vogue.
The collection comprised high-end fashion pieces and quirky WFH-wear too. Hotel slippers, “orthopedic” sandals, and bathrobe coats made from sustainably sourced woolly teddy bear fabric. Talk about the utmost comfort on a runway!
We also loved the edgy sunglasses paired with the outfits. They were sleek, looked superior, and had full coverage, perfect for maximum protection from the harsh sunlight and paparazzi flashlights. The classic upward sweep of the cat eye frame and jet black lenses made them ideal accessories for the fashion-forward public.

Miu – Rectangle Sunglasses
As the world slowly goes back to normal. Miuccia Prada set the stage on fire at Palais d’Iéna where the Miu show traditionally takes place. Her guests were seated in work chairs and treated to a back-to-work collective for the post-pandemic age.
Though the clothes left us speechless (it did get progressively cropped as the show progressed!), there was another accessory that we couldn’t get our eyes off – Sunglasses! The chunky rectangle sunglasses oozed sophistication and idealistic allure as the model strutted down the runway. I can’t wait for these sunglasses to make the transition from runway to clubs and see how people style them in daily life!
