“The moment my helmet goes off, I slip into my sunglasses because today, it’s very hard to operate outside without a good pair of shades.” — Vir Nakai
Imagine riding a motorcycle along the beckoning coastal stretches of West and South India in a killer pair of aviators. Looks badass, doesn’t it? Some really seasoned bikers have vouched for classic shapes like aviators and wayfarers in cementing their tough-guy image. We got in touch with one such pro biker to find out if the winter sun along the coastal span of South and West India is any different. Turns out, it’s harsh! Vir Nakai, a travel influencer and motorcycle enthusiast shares his point of view on why sunglasses are crucial for every biker.

A Biker’s POV On Sunglasses
Born and brought up in the beautiful city of Chandigarh, Vir called the mountains his second home. Living in proximity to the Himalayas ignited his passion for riding at a very young age. He calls his family a big-time fan of sunglasses where everyone has their befitting pair of aviators. “You will find every second person in Chandigarh sporting a swag pair of shades. Of course, Punjabis riding their cruisers in sunglasses is more like following the family legacy. But UV protection sunglasses are a must even when you are off your helmet,” Vir emphasized.
Aviator sunglasses are a classic and one of the most loved sunglasses styles for everyone, Vir included! Reminiscing about his father and grandfather, Vir says, “I have always looked up to them for inspiration. And their old-school aviators in slinky teardrop lenses build the image of how stylish sunglasses for men should look like!” He then proudly claimed, “I have a separate wardrobe for my collection of sunglasses. In fact, three aviators are sitting on my working desk as we speak.”
Well we have said it before, and we’ll say it again: for every role, every personality, and every moment of style and spunk, nothing beats a pair of classic aviators!
Sunglasses For Bikers
Like any responsible rider, Vir firmly states the safety aspect of riding in proper gear. Ranking first on his list of safety gear is his full-face carbon fiber helmet. Vir says, “Whether you’re a city commuter, a speed demon revving at full throttle on the race tracks, or a grizzled biker scaling mountain roads, a helmet is a must! That’s stating the obvious.” He added, “Secondly, you should invest in sturdy armored jackets and pants. Don’t forget the temperature-appropriate and knuckle protecting gloves along with a solid set of riding boots.”
“With good gear, you also need to have a decent pair of shades. You must not buy it off-road because the coolness factor comes last; what one should prioritize is your eyes’ protection from UV rays, pollution, dust and even harsh wind. And there’s no safe riding without clear vision.”

West And South India Rides
“Today, I mostly dwell in Mumbai so Goa seems next door. My rides are frequent to Goa as it hosts a number of moto-fests. Goa in any season means you wear your shades at breakfast and remove them only when you crawl back into your room.”
Vir’s eyes lit up in excitement recollecting his time at the beaches of Tamil Nadu and the ghats of Sultan Badri. And he shared several snippets from riding in the Southern hotspots like Coorg, Ooty, Kodaikanal. He further explained, “Sun in the South is harsh regardless of the season.” And we couldn’t agree more. In fact, even in mist-laden hill stations like Ooty and Kodaikanal, the sun is always shining at its brightest. So you need your sunglasses for all-time protection.

Eye Safety Advice For Young Riders
Vir is all about eye safety on the road and cautions young riders to focus on the same. He says, “See what you are buying. If possible, carry at least two pairs of shades with you all the time. And refrain from buying it off the road, make sure that your sunglasses have quality lenses. Because today more than ever, it’s not just the sun your shades are protecting your eyes from. It won’t be wrong to say that pollution has become a grave issue and a trigger for eye problems even more.”
He further informed that effective high-quality sunglasses for bikers can be bought at an affordable price today. “Of course, there are biker glasses that come for exorbitant prices. But my point is that when riding anywhere, be it North, South, Northeast, or West, if you consider eye safety, you must have a pair of shades. Especially when it’s easily affordable!”
